Harvest is in full swing, and we tapped some of our savviest sources for an update on how it’s going in different regions across the Northern Hemisphere.
California
The 2024 California harvest has been a pleasant surprise, defying initial concerns about record-breaking summer heat. Regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma benefited from a mild August, producing balanced, high-quality grapes. In the Central Valley, despite higher temperatures, the harvest remained on schedule with notable yields in Zinfandel and Merlot. The Central Coast saw smaller yields, but the quality remains exceptional. Across the state, clear skies and minimal smoke have contributed to excellent conditions, resulting in a promising vintage.
Washington
In Washington, the 2024 harvest is shaping up nicely, with a steady growing season yielding high-quality fruit across the state. Sun-loving vineyards have thrived in the consistent summer warmth, allowing grapes to develop excellent concentration and flavor. White varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc are particularly impressive this year, showing great balance and vibrancy. The predictable weather has led to uniform ripening, giving winemakers plenty to be optimistic about. As the harvest progresses, there’s growing anticipation that 2024 could be a notable vintage for Washington.
Oregon
Oregon’s 2024 harvest is generating buzz, with cooler weather in the Willamette Valley setting the stage for an intriguing vintage. The slower ripening has allowed grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining bright acidity. Pinot Noir, Oregon’s star varietal, seems particularly well-suited to these conditions. Winemakers are quietly optimistic, anticipating wines of exceptional freshness and elegance that truly capture the character of this cool, measured growing season.
France
France’s harvest is expected to be one of the smallest in a century, with production estimated to fall by 18% due to adverse weather, including mildew and poor fruit set. Regions like Burgundy and the Loire Valley are particularly affected, while other areas such as Bordeaux, Champagne, and Languedoc-Roussillon also face declines. Despite the diminished quantity, hopes are high for quality.
Italy
Italy’s 2024 grape harvest is in full swing, offering a mix of challenges and promise. While reports indicate good overall grape quality, unpredictable weather—from spring rains to summer heat waves and storms—has led to reduced yields in some regions. Italian winemakers have had to adapt quickly to these changing conditions. Despite the hurdles, the grapes, especially red varieties, are showing encouraging potential. These final weeks of harvest will be crucial.
